Brice Marden, Letters, Matthew Marks Gallery, NY

I wasn’t that familiar with Marden’s work before seeing this show in Chelsea, but I thought these paintings were very satisfying, and although cosmetically simple and flat, there is a lot of visual and optical complexity to the works. The blank bands of canvas either side of the swirling lines of colour really focus the viewer in on the detail of the lines, and their delicate interplay. The colours are muted, but self assured, and the shapes are occasionally reminiscent of Matisse’s figures.
